Spring is the perfect time to bring your lawn back to life. After a particularly snowy winter, your grass may look dull, damaged, or spotted with yellow patches. Here are the key steps to follow for a healthy lawn in the spring.
1. Clean the Lawn After Winter
As soon as the snow has melted and the ground is dry, start by removing debris left behind by winter: branches, dead leaves, and litter. This spring clean-up allows light, air, and water to better penetrate the soil, promoting healthy growth from the early weeks.
2. Rake to Remove Thatch and Loosen the Soil
Compaction caused by snow can prevent the soil from breathing. Use a lawn rake to dislodge dead grass and loosen the surface. This also helps prevent diseases such as snow mold, which are common after harsh winters.
3. Aerate the Lawn if Needed
If you notice water pooling or the soil feels very hard, consider mechanically aerating your lawn. Aeration helps the roots absorb water, nutrients, and oxygen more effectively—something essential after a long, cold winter.
4. Reseed Damaged Areas
Some parts of your lawn may have suffered during the winter. Sow grass seeds in bare or thin areas to restore thickness. Water regularly to ensure proper germination.
5. Fertilize the Lawn in Spring
Applying a nitrogen-rich (N) fertilizer in early spring kick-starts lawn growth. Wait until the grass is dry, then apply the fertilizer just before a rain or lightly water afterward for best results.
6. Mow Gradually to Strengthen the Lawn
Don’t mow too short at the beginning. Wait until the grass reaches about 8 cm (3 inches), then cut it down to 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches). Gradual mowing helps strengthen the roots and prevents drying out.
By following these steps, you’ll give your lawn the best chance to recover after a tough winter, ensuring a lush, healthy garden all season long.
